Asha Bhosle was a member of the musical family of Deenanath Mangeshkar, a Marathi and Konkani, and his Gujarati wife, Shevanti, and was born on September 8, 1933, in the small hamlet of Goar in Sangli, then in the honorable princely state of Sangli (now in Maharashtra). On the Marathi musical stage, Deenanath performed as both a classical singer and an actor. Asha’s father passed away when she was nine years old. From Pune, the family relocated to Kolhapur, and from there to Mumbai. To help their family, she and her older sister, Lata Mangeshkar, started singing and acting in movies.

Asha Bhosle performed “Chala Chala Nav Bala,” her debut film song, for the Marathi movie Majha Bal. (1943). Datta Davjekar wrote the soundtrack for the movie. When she performed the song “Saawan Aaya” for Hansraj Behl’s Chunariya, she made her Hindi film debut. (1948). Her debut solo song in a Hindi film was recorded for the film Raat Ki Raani. (1949).

Asha Bhosle has received seven Filmfare Best Female Playback Awards out of a total of 18 nominations. Her first two prizes came to her in 1967 and 1968. (Mangeshkar requested that her name not be included in nominations for awards after 1969 to support fresh talent.) Following in the footsteps of her older sister, Bhosle asked that her name not be included in any future nominations after winning the award in 1979. Despite this, Bhosle and Alka Yagnik are the recipients of this honor the most frequently. Later, she won the Filmfare Award for Lifetime Achievement in 2001 in addition to the Special Award for Rangeela in 1996.

In the Prabhukunj Apt neighborhood of South Mumbai’s Peddar Road is where Asha’s home is located. When Asha was 16 years old, she and Ganpatrao Bhosle fled together. The couple split up in 1960. They have five grandchildren and three children. Her oldest kid, Hemant Bhosle (who was named after Hemant Kumar), spent the majority of his formative years working as a pilot before quitting to pursue a brief career as a music director. On October 8, 2012, Varsha Bhosle committed suicide. She was 56 years old and a columnist for The Sunday Observer and Rediff.

Anand Bhosle, Asha’s youngest child, has a background in both business and film directing. He is in charge of Asha’s career. Chaitanya (Chintu) Bhosle, Hemant’s son, and her grandson are musicians. He is a member of “A Band of Boys,” the first and only boy band in India. Lata and Usha Mangeshkar, her sisters, are playback singers. The Kapoor family of Hindi films enjoys her Paya dish, Goan fish curry, and dal a lot. She once responded, “I would have become a cook,” when The Times of India asked her what she would have done if her singing career had not taken off. I would have made money by cooking in four homes. Asha’s passion for cooking propelled her into the restaurant industry. She owns and operates Asha’s restaurants in Kuwait and Dubai. Traditional northwestern Indian food is served at Asha’s.

Future locations are also planned for Cairo, Egypt, and the Mall of the Emirates in Dubai. Asha Bhosle owns 20% of the company. I have sung as many as 6,000 songs of various hues, be they classical, pop or folk songs. I have even performed free of charge for the Maharashtra government.

Performing in each city is a different experience. But somehow, New York is unique. It is like performing in the entertainment capital of the world.

By now, everyone knows I do not just sing standing in the middle of the stage. I also dance and get others to dance with me.

I was approached for acting roles when I was young. I had said that I look into the mirror every day and don’t think my face suits for the big screen. So I will not do the films.

I don’t run after money or fame. The only thing I have always wished is to be a classical singer.

When you don’t know how to pronounce words, when you don’t know the meaning of the words, how will you imbibe a song with feeling?

There is a gap between the heart and brain – that is where the soundbox lies. Some sing from their heart; others use their brain.

Hindi film music has always been completely driven by the plot. We singers never had any say in compositions.
